ABOUT TOURE MUHAMMED

Toure Muhammed is a Brooklyn born artist.  He spent a good part of his formative years in North Carolina, being raised by his grandmother and uncle.  He is the son of a Rev and Speech Pathologist who felt being raised outside of the city would be best for the future their two sons.  Toure believes that he didn’t choose the arts; the arts chose him.  He was often called a daydreamer in elementary school.  Those daydreams became the seeds of writings as he matriculated through school.

It was at St. Augustine’s College where he developed a solid foundation in photography and the performing arts, specifically acting and filmmaking.  There he appeared in the theatre department’s production every semester play roles that ranged from an “Eddie” the incestuous cowboy in Sam Shepards’ “A Fool for Love” to “Creon” the king of Thebes in Sophocles’ “Antigone”.   It was his time on stage that taught him how to work with actors as a cast member and as a director.

Filmmaking was a natural transition after spending his years working behind the scenes acting.  After he returned home from college St. Paul Community Baptist Church provided a place to further nurture and hone his acting and to learn directing from award winning actors and directors.  Being able to delve into the world of filmmaking and acting really gave him a place where he felt he belonged..  To date he has directed or produced pieces for both stage and screen.  A few of those are “And A Child” his my first narrative film; ”A Savior Born” a stage piece which was presented at St. Paul Community Baptist Church; and “Lost and Found his most recent narrative short.   He was also the Director of Photography for the award winning film “Salina P”.

Toure says; “I find that I can live as unlimited as my mind and heart allows.  Many people dream and wake up.  Some awaken to forget and reminisce.  But there are a few out there who awaken to living their dream.  That’s exactly what I do; good, bad or ugly.  Art is life.”
